Five ways to use use digital signage in higher education

Colleges and universities are embracing digital signage both inside and outside the classroom. Whether it's for displaying wayfinding information, classroom timetables, improving student safety or distributing campus news, the advantages that digital signage has over static boards for a generation raised on technology is clear. Timetabling and room bookings Long gone are the days when last minute room changes threw entire classes into chaos. More than 70 per cent of universities in the UK, and an ever growing number in the US, now take advantage of databased timetables. This technology enables push notifications to be sent to students with classroom information and times for entire semesters. Software services such as Visix enable this to be rolled out to digital signage positioned outside lecture theatres or classrooms – syncing student information with location specific digital signage and negating the chance of confusion and missed classes. digital signage in education Wayfinding For visitors and newly enrolled students, university and college campuses can be vast and daunting environments. Digital signage positioned in foyers, faculties and within learning centres and refectories can make it easier for students (and often staff) to navigate their way. One novel way in which some universities are innovating in their space is to tie-in wayfinding information with specific timetabled events. For example, social events and sports fixtures can be advertised and signposted on wayfinding enabled digital signage to not only advertise the event, but to guide those interested towards them.

digital signage in education Student and campus safety Immediate calls to action – such as fire alarms – is one area where digital signage excels. In the US, university campuses invoke the Campus Ready disaster-emergency plan. In the case of quickly and urgently needing to lock-down or evacuate a campus – where often many thousands of students and staff are on site – digital signage can be activated to give emergency instructions, guiding people to safety, disseminating vital information and instructions. In less immediate instances, digital signage can be used to educate and remind students of sensible precautions, such as only taking registered taxis and not overindulging at the student bar (and what to do if they ignore these precautions). Create unity and community Universities and colleges are proud places, where individual and collective achievements are celebrated. Using digital signage to deliver clear branding, coupled with feeds that deliver positive news helps build a sense of unity within staff and students. Examples of this can include sports team results and honours; celebrating the success of a department; or fundraising activities. Morale boosting video and imagery is also perfect for digital signage delivery. digital signage in education Campus co-ordination The most obvious boon of digital signage is its immediacy and specificity. For example, universities and campuses can advertise book sales during reading week; or tailor daily menu announcements at different times of the day for different refectories and canteens. Theatre productions can be advertised – to include only up and coming events – while social events and students union activities can be previewed. NFC enabled screens can even offer students the chance to book and buy tickets directly from the screen, while volunteering and after-school activities for the day can be advertised in a more engaging manner. digital signage in education   Image credits www.netpresenter.com www.22miles.com www.penn.edu Speak to ASUS about how to implement digital signage in your company   Get the best content from ASUS Business Hub sent to your inbox.
