How to Protect Your Eyes While Working from Home

Working from home can present different challenges to working in an office. You have fewer reasons to get up and move around; after all, your colleagues are now solely accessible through digital formats. Lunch breaks are likely spent at your desk, and any meetings you had planned will also be in front of your computer, and not face-to-face with another human being. With all this additional time in front of a screen, it’s vital you consider how to keep your eyes healthy and minimise stress and potential eye fatigue. From taking breaks to making use of ASUS’ Eye Care+ Monitors, let’s look at how you can enjoy added screen time, without visual strain.

Blink More

When we use our computers, many of us forget to blink, or blink much less than we normally do – up to two thirds less than normal. This is because we’re often focused on something such as a piece of work, a video, or a work task that requires our undivided attention. This lack of regular blinking results in drier, more irritated eyes. Combine this with dry, warm environments (which many of us opt for, particularly in the winter months) and you have a recipe for eye strain and pain. The solution? Remember to blink more. A simple, but easy to remember tip, but one that will result in much healthier, more comfortable eyes. Just remember to take longer, meaningful blinks; these longer blinks are what properly lubricate your eyes, more so than shorter, more rapid blinks.

Take Breaks

Along with blinking a little more often, it’s important you take time to stop looking at your screen every now and again, to give your eye muscles a chance to relax. Common advice dictates you take 20 seconds to look at something 20 feet away every 20 minutes. Further to this, it’s recommended you take time to get up and move away from your desk and screens, not only to rest your eyes, but to give your body a chance to stretch, move, and get out of the rigid postures we typically take when sitting for longer periods of time.

Use Proper Lighting

In addition to moving away from our screens, ensure the environment they’re in supports healthy eye-care. That means sufficient lighting in your home office, and avoiding large contrasts between outdoor and indoor lighting; your office shouldn’t be dark if outside is particularly bright. Use soft lights that don’t produce glare on your monitors, and position monitors so that they’re not directly in front of or facing away from windows, which can also cause eye fatigue.

ASUS Eye Care+ Monitors

As for the displays themselves, there are many modern solutions available to minimise eye fatigue when working from home or in offices for long periods of time. Windows offers its own ‘Night Light- feature that softens display’s bright white backlights. You can take this a step further however, by investing in displays that put eye care at the top of the list of important features. For example, ASUS’ Eye Care+ monitors feature exclusive Blue Light Filter and Flicker Free technologies that reduce the risk of Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) symptoms, such as headaches, red eyes, eye strain, fatigue, and more. These displays are specifically certified to minimise glare, eye-affecting flickering, and reducing the high-energy blue-violet light that’s capable of harming elements of the eye.

Adjust Your Monitor

Pair a better-quality monitor with a more effective monitor position. Avoid placing your displays in areas where glare on the screen is common from windows, or where lights will reflect on your display’s screen. In addition to taking care of your eyes, you can aid your posture by placing your display at the correct height and orientation so that your neck and back are correctly aligned, avoiding slumping or postures that will result in longer-term back issues and pain.   Our world is increasingly focused on maintaining personal health and welfare, and our eyes are one of our most important senses when interacting with the world around us. Ensure you keep your eyes at their best and fatigue-free with these tips.   Learn more about business products that ensure healthy productivity, with ASUS Business.
