Then Vs. Now: How Our World Is More Prepared Than Ever for Remote Working

Modern broadband wasn’t introduced to the UK until the early 2000’s, with 56Kbps lines still commonplace. It took until 2007 for half of all internet users to possess a modern broadband connection. With this explosion in modern internet came a wealth of improvements to our technology; computers became more powerful, smartphones were introduced, fax machines went the way of the dodo and email replaced them. Since the start of this millennium, our world has evolved multiple times through phases of technology, and we’re in a better place than ever to work remotely. See for yourself.

Internet

As mentioned above, internet has come a long way. A movie-length video (700mb) would take the average user 213 hours or 9 days to finish downloading, while modern internet allows us to stream immediately, or download such file sizes in seconds. This has meant our working world doesn’t have to be tied to a local network in one location; these days, we can upload our files and software into the cloud or to an on-site server, and high-speed internet allows us to access those files anywhere in the world almost immediately.

Computers

Alongside improvements to our internet speed, our computers have leaped forward in performance, innovation and feature sets. Gone are the beige boxes of the nineties and early noughties; replacing them has come thinner and lighter laptops that can equal the performance of many desktops in use today, and far outperforming the desktops of a decade ago. Video editors, graphic designers, artists and more; the most demanding users are able to step away from bulky desktops in offices and do their work on the go, with laptops that have dozens of cores and threads in them, and even desktop-grade graphics. Our systems have become incredibly powerful, meaning we can work wherever we are now; no more grouping in an office to get things done.

Communication

As our networks have evolved, so have the ways in which we communicate. Skype, Teams, Slack, Zoom, and more allow us to press a button and stream high-quality HD video to dozens of people globally, centralising teams that can be spread across the world and allowing them face-to-face interactions immediately. Communication is immediate now; fax machines, landline telephones, and paper mail are all but gone from the workplace. Emails, video calling, and multi-channel chat apps like Slack and Teams have replaced them, for the better.

Delivery Services

Outside the realm of the office, delivery systems have improved. Like the mention of email transforming how quickly teams can communicate now, the level of logistics services in our modern world has also transformed. Such services allow rapid delivery of goods and services across the world, and have become cheaper than ever. Where everything used to be shipped to the office, now such delivery services allow businesses to distribute products and office equipment quickly and easily to teams across the country or globe. There’s a global direct link from warehouses to your front door that allows rapid transit of goods with little or no interference or delay. Amazon’s Prime and Prime Now delivery systems are perfect examples: Fulfilment centres quickly identify and pick out orders, preparing them for delivery with swift packing and labelling. Lorries carrying more than 2,000 boxes distribute to sortation centres, before local delivery services and Amazon drivers make the drop-off. Such services are set to become even more convenient, with AI and robotics increasing order-picking speeds, and the potential use of drones to deliver orders.   Our world has changed and more employees than ever are working from home (just check out our facts and figures article to see how working remotely can improve business performance), and the transformation in our technology has allowed this change to take place.
