Retail is Evolving: Why Tills Are On Their Way Out

Not long ago, the idea of shopping without physical money was absurd. Physical money and cheques were the norm. Debit and credit cards have progressively established themselves as the de-facto payment method in our modern digital lives; a decade ago, cash was the payment method in six of every ten payments. In 2018, cash payments were down 16%, with UK finance station that 10% of consumers made one or zero cash payments per month in 2018. The nature of spending is shifting. Even small shops and market stalls are making the switch to digital payments, made simple by card-payment devices and other technologies. The era of the till is ending, and digital payment methods are already here to take its place.

Stores Are Taking Their Business Digital

Debit card transactions overtook cash as the predominant payment method for the first time in 2018, due in part to the introduction of contactless payments, making it easy for consumers to spend £30 or less simply by tapping their cards to payment devices in stores. With this shift to a cashless way of spending, businesses are starting to see the benefits – for themselves and for consumers – in moving away from cash-based transactions. Higher Financial Security With no physical money being transferred, the risks of finances being stolen or intercepted are vastly reduced. Simple misplacement of cash, theft (by internal and external figures), and so on. Digital payments make business finances safer. Better Financial Efficiency When physical money is removed from the financial equation, life for business owners becomes easier:
  • Consider the time saved in business hours over a year from till-operators having to check notes or organise till cash stocks. Card payments, particularly contactless payments, are quick, meaning higher throughput of customer spending. British consumers are notorious for queuing, but contactless spending could spell the end of waiting in line to pay for products and services.
  • The conveyance of cash from the store to a financial institution equals wasted time for money to be used or reinvested into the business, as well as causing delays in accounting and financial understanding day-to-day. Digital payments are usually noticeable immediately or within a few hours, enabling businesses to see actively how business is performing. Business can thus track both high and low-performing periods against their income, enabling them to ultimately improve their bottom line.
  • It’s cheaper to manage money digitally for businesses. The removal of cash costs, security for transportation of cash, and so on means more money for the business to invest in other areas or retain as profit.
Better Convenience for Both Employees and Customers There’s no question; splitting notes into change is a pain for both employee and customer. Better instead for both parties for the customer to simply tap their card against a receiver and carry on without difficulty with their purchase. Additionally, it makes spending easier for consumers who otherwise may not want to split notes or search bags or pockets for cash, resulting in better average transaction value (ATV) figures for businesses.
